The 4 Points to Ponder When Selecting Fabrics
With so many fabrics to choose from, decisions can be overwhelming. Use the tips below to select and layer the perfect fabrics for your home.
Color
Make sure that your fabrics complement the existing colors in the space. You’ll
want to keep your primary, complementary, and neutral colors consistent. You
can layer different shades of your primary color for a gorgeous look.
Texture
Textures provide a great way to add dimension and visual interest to your
design. Select a few fabrics that offer unique textures so you have the flexibility
to layer other fabrics on top of them.
Repeat
The repeat of fabric is a key factor to know before deciding which fabric you want to use. For example: if you are selecting fabric for small pillows you would not want to select a fabric with a super large horizontal repeat. It is also important when factoring in how much yardage you will need. Horizontal and vertical repeats should be taken into consideration when calculating yardage.
Dyelots
A dye lot is the batch that the fabric yarn that has been dyed in. So, you may have 2 rolls of the same shade number, but if they’re dyed at different times, they could be slightly different. For example, if you are purchasing fabric for a chair and ottoman, you would want to make sure to get fabric from the same dye lot for both pieces, especially if the chair and ottoman will sit together. Slight variations in color are extremely important to watch out for when pieces in the same fabric are placed together.
Hopefully, this gives you more of an idea of how to choose the fabrics for your next interior design project.
Remember to take a small sample of the fabric to the project so you can visualize it in the room.
