Have you ever had a goal that, in your heart, you knew would happen, but you weren’t sure how or when?
From the very beginning of my career, that’s how I felt about product design. It’s something I always knew I would do … eventually.
In 2019, all the pieces fell perfectly into place to make the vision a reality.
It happened during High Point Market, an event that takes place twice a year in North Carolina. Imagine fashion week for interior design. Designers and suppliers from around the world meet to share the latest trends and innovations in home furnishings and interior design.
At the time, I was making progress on my product design goal and was considering a few options for licensing agreements but hadn’t settled on anything yet.
Meanwhile, during Market, I designed a showroom that featured key accessories from Chelsea House.
When the team from Chelsea House saw the showroom, they loved it and reached out to schedule a meeting. From there, a simple lunch meeting became one of those big moments in life where everything seems meant to be. (It didn’t hurt that my daughter’s name is Chelsey.)
Fast forward a year and the Shayla Copas Collection for Chelsea House debuted.
Of course, when deciding on a licensing partnership, it’s also important to think strategically.
With Chelsea House, I had a strong understanding of their brand and how my collection could add something fresh while honoring their legacy of hospitality and classic sophistication.
I was able to infuse my love of color and texture into the collection, as well as other elements that inspire me, like nature, fashion, and travel.
You’ll notice details, both bold and subtle, that reflect these inspirations, like a honeycomb pattern that’s a nod to both Chanel and bees—two things I admire. Or rock studs inspired by Valentino shoes. Or the shape of a lamp inspired by my travels.
When I think back over my life and all the things that led me here, I’m convinced that anything can happen if you put your mind to it.
In just the past couple of years, the product design segment of my business has continued to expand.
I’m currently working on a new collection for Chelsea House inspired by my recent trip to Peru that I’m really excited about. Stay tuned for more details …
I’m also designing indoor/outdoor fabrics for Polywood—a fantastic company that creates outdoor furniture using recycled plastic materials.
AND I have another very exciting announcement about a new partnership that I can’t wait to share in the upcoming months.
