Are Organic Beauty Products Really Better?

Do you ever feel like you need a PhD in chemistry to understand the ingredients listed on your skincare and beauty products?

It can be tempting to choose products that say “natural” or “organic” on the label, and hope for the best, without really understanding what we’re putting on our skin.

But keep in mind, our skin absorbs 60-70% of everything we put on it, and product packaging can be misleading.

It’s important to be informed and pay attention to what we’re buying.

Is There a Difference Between “Natural” and “Organic”?

With beauty products, there are no regulations regarding the use of the word “natural.” This means the “all-natural sunscreen” you love could contain toxic chemicals.

On the other hand, products that claim to be “organic” must comply with regulations set forth by both the USDA and FDA.

For example, to use the phrase “made with organic ingredients” on the label, at least 70% of the product’s ingredients must be organic. And to call a product “certified organic,” at least 95% of its ingredients must be chemical-free.

However, some companies will label their products as organic when they are not.

Look for evidence of organic certification, such as EcoCert, Cosmos, BDIH, and USDA Organic.

Are Cosmetics Made with Organic Ingredients Safer?

According to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, companies that sell cosmetics are legally obligated to ensure their products are safe for the intended use, whether or not they use organic ingredients.

Still, it’s up to you to be aware of what you are using and how it might affect your body.

It’s also important to understand that neither organic nor natural ingredients make cosmetics safer. Why? Because the source of an ingredient does not determine its safety.

That being said, because organic beauty products are essentially chemical-free, they are less likely to cause allergic reactions or irritations.

Also, keep in mind that the words “vegan” and “cruelty-free” are not synonymous with natural or organic.

What Are the Benefits of Organic Beauty Products?

  1. Organic Skin Care Products are Made from Natural Ingredients
Certified organic ingredients are plant-based, and grown without the use of GMOs, pesticides, fertilizers or herbicides, which means your body is not absorbing unwanted synthetic chemicals. The products don’t contain toxins, mineral oils, petroleum, parabens, or man-made chemicals which can cause skin irritation, hormone imbalance, and even cancer.
  2. Vital Antioxidants
Cosmetics made from organic plants contain high levels of antioxidant vitamins. In contrast, the chemicals found in non-organic products can damage and weaken skin, causing premature aging and sunspots.
  3. Environmental Protection
Organically grown ingredients that are pesticide- and herbicide-free do not have a harmful impact on soil, water or air. Organic farming results in lower rates of pollution from chemicals and produces less carbon dioxide. It’s also better for wildlife.
  4. Cruelty-Free
Organic products are ethically sourced and not tested on animals, so they are naturally cruelty free.

Bottom Line: When purchasing cosmetics and skincare products, choose organic products—with the certification listed on the label—whenever possible. You’ll be helping the environment and your skin.
