Tile Mosaics: Ancient Art Forms That Add Style to Any Surface

For centuries, mosaics of various materials have been used to bring dimension and style to areas of the home that were otherwise flat and mundane. In fact, ElleDecor.com notes that the historic art form was first used way back in the fourth millennium B.C., and utilized small pieces (called tesserae) of stone, glass, fired clay, or other hard materials to cover a surface, often to create a pattern or depict an image.
Because the process was so labor-intensive, tile work was once found in only the most aristocratic houses. But now it is a versatile, hard-wearing, and practical option—ideal for kitchens and baths, of course, but also for walls and floors in other rooms as well as swimming pools.
Nothing creates a more vivid and stunning tile landscape than the ceramic, metal, glass and stone tile by Ann Sacks–one of Shayla Copas Interiors’ preferred tile manufacturers. The nationally recognized Portland-based design company has been around since 1980 and has become well-known for their distinctly contemporary tiles.

We’re working on our Sept. Kitchen and Bath issue, and I’ve been admiring all the gorgeous tiles used on the backsplashes and shower walls. The mosaics here are beautiful, would love to see them worked into a room.
